Kundiman (English spelling)

Japanese: クンディマン（英語表記）kundiman

This is a love song of the Tagalog people who live in central Luzon, Philippines. In the past, it was dedicated by a man to a woman during courtship. It is said to have been called kundiman because the lyrics usually begin with kung hindi man (I am a humble man). It is characterized by a sentimental melody with a sad feeling in it, in 3/4 time and minor key. It flourished for about half a century from 1880 to 1930, and it is said that soldiers especially liked to sing the kundiman called "Joselina of the Baliwag" during the Philippine Revolution.

フィリピン，ルソン島中央部に住むタガログ族の愛の歌。古くは，求愛に際して男が女に捧げた。通常，クンヒンディマンkung hindi man(私はしがない者だが)で歌詞が始まることから，クンディマンと呼ばれるようになったという。3/4拍子，短調で，哀感を漂わせた感傷的な旋律を特徴とする。1880年から1930年頃にかけての半世紀ほどの間に隆盛を極め，特にフィリピン革命時には《バリワッグのホセリーナ》というクンディマンを兵士達が好んで歌ったという。
