Populares (English spelling)

Japanese: ポプラレス（英語表記）Populares

A political party in the final days of the Roman Republic. It can be translated as "popular faction." It refers to people who sought to win the favor of the plebs (commoners) and implemented policies with their support, and was in conflict with the Optimates (oppositional faction) of the Senate. They were not necessarily from the plebs, nor did they entirely represent the interests of the plebs. Representative figures include the Gracchi brothers, who tried to limit land ownership by the patricians (nobles) and allocate land to the plebs, but later figures such as G. Marius and Julius Caesar instead used the support of the plebs as a political strategy to gain power for themselves.

ローマ共和政末期の党派。民衆派と訳される。プレプス (平民) の歓心を買おうとした人々で，プレプスの支持を得て政策を行なった人々をさし，元老院によるオプチマテス (閥族派) と対立した。彼らは必ずしもプレプスの出ではなく，全面的にプレプスの利害を代表したわけでもない。代表的人物には，パトリキ (貴族) の土地所有を制限してプレプスに土地を配分しようとしたグラックス兄弟があるが，以後の G.マリウス，ユリウス・カエサルらはむしろ政略としてプレプスの支持を取付け，自己の権力獲得に利用した。
