…Italian architect. He served Pope Sixtus V (reigned 1585-90) and contributed to the urban development of the Papal city of Rome. In 1585, he moved the great obelisk next to St. Peter's Basilica to the square in front of the basilica, which earned him fame. The move required 900 men and 140 horses, a huge wooden frame, and 40 winches, and the process was recorded in a collection of prints he produced. Under his direction, he also moved obelisks to the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, and the Piazza del Popolo as nodes of the city's main roads, creating a new Rome landscape of straight streets linking historic churches. …
