A term in Indian philosophy. Its original meaning was "coiled female serpent," referring to the innermost vital or enabling force of the individual human being. In later yoga and tantric religions, near the base of the human spine is a place called the "root seat," or mūlādhāra. Kundalini is the mystical force that resides there and governs and directs human activity. It is also a sexual force, and practitioners aim to unite Kundalini with the Atman.
