Diogo Cão (English spelling) Diogo Cao

Diogo Cão (English spelling) Diogo Cao

The Kingdom of Kongo was a black nation with a fairly well-established political system and material culture, with a territory that stretched from the western end of the present-day Kongo (the area around the mouth of the Congo River) to northern Angola, and ruled many small chiefdoms in the Matamba and Ndongo regions as its territories. In 1482, the Portuguese Diogo Cão led a fleet to the mouth of the Congo River, and this was the first time that the Kingdom of Kongo had contact with European powers. The Kingdom of Kongo had a very friendly attitude toward Portugal, and the king at the time, Nzinga Nkuwu (reigned ?-1506), (known as Mani Kongo), adopted a Portuguese name and called himself João I, and established diplomatic relations with Portugal.
