Vosges Mountains - Vosges

Vosges Mountains - Vosges
A mountain range stretching 120 km from north-northeast to south-southwest in eastern France between the Alsace plain and the Lorraine plateau. Its highest peak is the Baron de Guébbiller (Grand Baron, 1,424 m). The valleys are deep and the passes are high due to glacial erosion, making transportation difficult, but railways and motorways connect Lorraine to Strasbourg over the Saverne Pass at an altitude of about 400 m in the north, and from the Saône plain to Basel through the Porte de Belfort in the south. The western slopes are moist and covered with forests, while the eastern slopes are dry. The summits are used for summer grazing, the middle slopes are used for dairy farming, which produces the famous cheese, and the hills are used for grape cultivation and Alsace wine production. The textile industry, mainly cotton weaving, is thriving around the mountain range, with the towns of Épinal and Saint-Dié at its centers. Furniture manufacturing is also important.
