...But it wasn't until 1847, when the bikini style first appeared at a beach in the south of France, that it created a sensation. In 1864, American R. Gernreich introduced a topless look in which she wore only shorts and nothing on the upper half of her body, which caused quite a stir. In Japan, beach bathing began around 1881, and by the middle of the Meiji period it had spread throughout the country.
