Japanese: クワガタムシ(鍬形虫) - クワガタムシ

A general term for insects belonging to the family Lucanidae of the order Coleoptera. Approximately 1,000 species are known from around the world, mainly in tropical regions, and about 30 species are known from Japan. The antennae are characterized by a long first segment, an elbow-shaped curve between the second segment, a comb-like shape at the top, and a five-segmented abdomen. They are mainly active at night and gather around tree sap. Many are black or brown in color. Males generally have significantly more developed mandibles than females. They were named stag beetles because their mandibles resemble the hoe-shaped ornaments found on helmets.

甲虫目クワガタムシ科Lucanidaeに属する昆虫の総称。熱帯地方を中心に世界から約1000種，日本から約30種が知られている。触角は第1節が長く，第2節との間がひじ状に曲がり，先の数節が櫛状になっていること，腹部が5節などの特徴がある。主として夜間活動し，樹液に集まる。色彩も黒色や褐色のものが多い。雄は雌に比べて一般に大あごが著しく発達する。大あごを冑の飾金具のくわ形にみたててクワガタムシと名づけられた。
