It is obtained by steam distillation of pine resin to remove turpentine (gum rosin), by solvent extraction from pine wood or pine stumps (wood rosin), or as a by-product of making pulp from pine wood using the Kraft method (tall rosin). A pale yellow to brown, transparent, brittle solid. It melts at 100-135°C and is soluble in organic solvents.
