Treaty for the Exchange of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands

Treaty for the Exchange of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands
A treaty signed in St. Petersburg on May 7, 1875 between plenipotentiaries Enomoto Takeaki and Gorchakov that resolved the territorial issue between Japan and Russia. It was ratified on August 22 of the same year and proclaimed on November 10. The status of the Northern Territories that the Meiji government inherited from the former shogunate has been such that since the Japan-Russia Treaty of Peace and Amity was signed on December 21, 1855 (February 7, 1855), Sakhalin has been a land inhabited by both Japanese and Russian nationals, and its ownership has remained unresolved, and the border between Japan and Russia for the Kuril Islands has been the area between the islands of Etorofu and Urup, with the area north of that being Russian territory.
