An insect of the family Trictenotomidae in the order Coleoptera. Its Japanese name comes from the fact that its mandibles are developed like those of stag beetles. It is found in central and southern China and Taiwan, but not in Japan. It is about 5 cm long and densely covered in short gray-brown hairs. The larvae bore holes under the bark of dead or rotting trees, pupate under the bark, and emerge as adults around May. They fly well and are said to like to gather around tree sap. The larvae's body is white and slender, with a pair of tail protrusions and thoracic legs. There are more than 10 known species of Trictenotomidae, but they mainly live in the forests of tropical Asia and do not live in Japan. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
