Matinee - English spelling matinée French

A daytime performance such as a play, movie, or concert. The opposite of soirée (night performance). The word comes from matin (morning), and in medieval European religious drama performances, it referred to a special performance held in the morning. Nowadays, it refers to a matinee performance held after noon, as opposed to a regular nighttime performance, and is held on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. In Japan, the Imperial Theater was the first to adopt this system in 1912 (Meiji 45). Most commercial theaters today have a two-part system, with the matinee performance being a daytime and nighttime performance, but the original meaning has faded.

演劇、映画、音楽会などの昼間興行。ソワレーsoirée（夜間興行）の対。マタンmatin（朝方）から出たことばで、中世ヨーロッパの宗教劇上演では午前中に行われる特別公演をさした。現在では、通常の夜間興行に対して正午過ぎの昼興行をいい、土、日曜、祝日などに行われる。日本では1912年（明治45）帝国劇場が初めて採用した。現在の商業劇場はほとんど昼夜二部制をとっており、昼の部はマチネーともいえるが、本来の意味は薄れている。
