Kuromo - Kuromo

Japanese: クロモ - くろも
Kuromo - Kuromo

A submerged perennial aquatic plant in the family Hydrocharisaceae (APG classification: Hydrocharisaceae). The stem is cylindrical, about 2 mm in diameter, somewhat stiff, and breaks easily. The leaves are dark green, lanceolate, and 1-2 cm long. They have prominent sawtooth edges, and 3-10 leaves grow on the stem in whorls 1-2 cm apart. Dioecious, sometimes monoecious. Flowering season is June-October, with one male flower in each leaf axil. Female flowers extend stalks from the leaf axils to the water surface, and are pollinated above the water surface. They overwinter as seeds or buds. Widely distributed in lakes and rivers around the world. The name comes from the color of the leaves.
