Born: February 15, 1892, Beacon, New York [Died] May 22, 1949, Bethesda, Maryland. American politician. After graduating from Princeton University, he enlisted in the Naval Air Corps during World War I. After the war, in 1919, he became involved with Dillon Read Aircraft Company in New York, becoming its president in 1938. In June 1940, he became Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Administrative Affairs to President F. Roosevelt, and in August of the same year, he became Under Secretary of the Navy. In May 1944, he became Secretary of the Navy, and in 1947, when the Department of Defense was established, he was appointed the first Secretary of Defense, and was responsible for the reorganization of the three branches of the military. Due to the extreme fatigue during the war and the stress of dealing with the issue of integrating the three services, he suffered a severe nervous breakdown, and in March 1949, he resigned as Secretary of Defense, and in May of the same year, he committed suicide by jumping from the Bethesda Naval Hospital.
