An Islamic mystical order (tariqa) founded by Suhrawardi (1097-1168). A monastery was built for Suhrawardi in Baghdad in the 12th century, laying the foundations of the order. In the 13th century, the order's activities were intensified by Suhrawardi's nephew, and it was from this time that it began to spread throughout the Islamic world. It spread to Syria, Egypt, Turkey, and other countries, but it is in India that the order's activities are most notable. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
