A Zen monk of the Obaku sect in the early Edo period. His religious name was Itsen, and his Buddhist name was Shoyu. He was born in Qiantang County, Hangzhou Prefecture, Zhejiang Province, during the Ming Dynasty, and his secular surname was Li. He came to Nagasaki in 1641 (Kan'ei 18) as a drug dealer. In 1644 (Shoho 1), he became a monk under Mokusunyojo, and the following year became the third abbot of Kofuku-ji Temple in Nagasaki. He worked hard to invite Ingen Ryuki, and when Ingen came to Japan in 1654 (Shoo 3), he welcomed him to Kofuku-ji Temple and made him the abbot. He passed away on July 14, 1668 (Kanbun 8) at the age of 68, and his towers can be found at Kofuku-ji Temple in Nagasaki and Obakusan Manpuku-ji Temple in Uji. In 1657 (Meireki 3), he published works such as "Five Lamps Gentong" and "Ingen Sayings" written by Feiyin Tongrong. He is highly regarded as a person who introduced a new style of Chinese painting, and is known as the founder of "Tang painting." He excelled in Buddhist and portrait paintings, and produced works such as "Kannonzu" (owned by Manpukuji Temple). His disciples included Kawamura Jakushi (who died in 1707 according to one theory), the founder of the Kawamura school, a Nagasaki school of painting, and Watanabe Shuseki (1639-1707).
