Togo Shrine

Japanese: 東郷神社 - とうごうじんじゃ
Togo Shrine

It is located in Jingumae, Shibuya Ward, Tokyo. The deity enshrined is Togo Heihachiro no Mikoto. Togo was born in 1847 (Koka 4) and was a naval admiral from the Satsuma domain. He was hailed as a great general for defeating the Russian fleet in the Russo-Japanese War, and he also served the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa emperors and was revered by the people. Thanks to the efforts of the Admiral Togo Memorial Association, a foundation established immediately after his death in 1934 (Showa 9), the shrine was built in 1940 as a prefectural shrine. It burned down during war damage in 1945, and was rebuilt in 1964 (Showa 39). The annual festival is held on May 28th in commemoration of the Battle of Tsushima.
