Nias [island] - Nias
An island in western Indonesia, close to the northwest coast of Sumatra. The inhabitants are the Nias people, who have their own language and religion, and are of ethnological interest. They are considered more primitive than the inhabitants of the main island of Sumatra, and have developed a megalithic culture linked to religion. They produce copra, bananas, etc. The capital is Gunung Sitoli on the east coast. 4,772 km2 . Population: about 350,000.
