1755‐1821 French physician and founder of modern cardiology, known as the rediscoverer of percussion, who also made contributions to the field of pathological anatomy. Born in Doricourt, Champagne, he studied medicine at the Hôtel-Dieu in Paris, and after serving as a physician at the Charité Hospital he became professor of internal medicine at the Collège de France and in 1807 became personal physician to Napoleon I. He rediscovered the percussion technique invented by J. L. Auenbrugger (1761), translated it into French (1808), and supplemented and improved it for use in diagnosing chest diseases.
