〘Noun〙① A Buddhist service held on the anniversary of the death of an emperor, empress, etc. Also, a Buddhist service held on the anniversary of the death of an aristocrat, the founder of a Buddhist sect, etc. Goki. ※Engishiki (927), 16 " A record of the next year's deceased will be prepared by the Ryo- no -myo-ji and onmyoji. It will be presented by the Naishi- no -tsukasa on December 10th."② A Buddhist service held especially on the anniversary of the death of Honen Shonin, the founder of the Jodo sect. In the Jodo sect, this was originally held from the 19th to the 25th of the first lunar month, but since the Meiji period, it has been held for seven days from the 19th to the 25th of April. The event at Chion-in Temple in Kyoto is particularly famous and is called Chion-ko. In the past, people in Kyoto would visit this temple as the start of their sightseeing trips, wearing beautiful kimonos and bringing lunch boxes, and this was called Bento Hajime. O-imi [Okimi]

("O" is a prefix. It means a time when the gods gather and should be observed with caution.) It refers to the tenth month of the lunar calendar. It is said in the Izumo region.

〘名〙① 天皇、皇后などの忌日に行なわれる法会(ほうえ)。また、貴人、仏教各宗派の開祖などの忌日の法会。ごき。※延喜式(927)一六「凡来年御忌者、寮預令陰陽師等勘録。十二月十日進内侍司」② 特に、浄土宗の開祖、法然上人の忌日に行なわれる法会。浄土宗では、もとは陰暦正月一九日から二五日まで、明治以降は四月一九日から二五日までの七日間これを行なうのを例とする。京都、知恩院の行事は特に有名で知恩講といい、昔は京の人々はこれを遊覧の初めとして美しいきものを着、弁当を持って参詣し、これを弁当始めと称した。《季・春》 〔俳諧・誹諧初学抄(1641)〕

ご‐き【御忌】

〘名〙 貴人や祖師などを敬って、その年忌の法会をいう語。ぎょき。※東宮年中行事(12C後か)一二月「十一日おむやうれう、らいねんのごきをけいする事」

お‐いみ【御忌】

〘名〙 (「お」は接頭語。神々が集まっているので、忌み慎むべき時という意から) 陰暦一〇月のこと。出雲地方でいう。
