〘名〙① 天皇、皇后などの忌日に行なわれる法会(ほうえ)。また、貴人、仏教各宗派の開祖などの忌日の法会。ごき。※延喜式（927）一六「凡来年御忌者、寮預令_二陰陽師等勘録_一。十二月十日進_二内侍司_一」② 特に、浄土宗の開祖、法然上人の忌日に行なわれる法会。浄土宗では、もとは陰暦正月一九日から二五日まで、明治以降は四月一九日から二五日までの七日間これを行なうのを例とする。京都、知恩院の行事は特に有名で知恩講といい、昔は京の人々はこれを遊覧の初めとして美しいきものを着、弁当を持って参詣し、これを弁当始めと称した。《季・春》〔俳諧・誹諧初学抄（1641）〕
