Yellow-spotted lugworm - Yellow-spotted lugworm

A marine animal belonging to the family Serpulidae of the class Polychaeta of the phylum Annelida. It is widely distributed south of Mutsu Bay and is quite common. It grows in overlapping colonies in the intertidal zone in places shaded by rocks. The burrowing tube is blue, the upper edge of the mouth protrudes forward in a triangular shape, and there is a row of small holes on both sides of the tube's surface. The body is 15 to 35 mm long and 2 mm wide. At the front end of the head is a gill crown consisting of about 20 pairs of gill filaments, each of which has 3 to 5 pairs of dark black eyespots. The shell stalk is flattened and the upper end becomes a pterygoid process. The shell lid is flattened and cup-shaped, and the upper surface is covered with a thin calcareous membrane. The body consists of 6 setal segments and no collar setae. The abdomen consists of many segments. They mature from May to October. Unlike the worm, they do not attach to underwater facilities and cause any damage.

環形動物門多毛綱カンザシゴカイ科に属する海産動物。陸奥(むつ)湾以南に広く分布し、ごく普通にみられる。潮間帯で岩の日陰になるような場所に重なり合って群生する。棲管(せいかん)は青色で、口の上縁が前方に向かって三角形状に突出しており、管の表面の両側には細かい孔(あな)が1列に並んでいる。虫体は長さ15～35ミリメートル、体幅2ミリメートル。頭部の前端には、20対ほどの鰓糸(さいし)からなる鰓冠があり、おのおのの鰓糸には、3～5対の暗黒色の眼点がある。殻柄は扁平(へんぺい)で、上端は翼状突起になる。殻の蓋(ふた)は扁平な杯状体で、上面は石灰質の薄い膜で覆われている。胴部は6剛毛節からなり、襟剛毛(えりごうもう)はない。腹部は多くの体節からなる。成熟期は5～10月。カサネカンザシゴカイのように、海中諸施設に付着して害を与えるようなことはない。
