Along with Dresdner Bank and Commerzbank, it is one of the three largest commercial banks in Germany, and has the largest deposits of the three. Its head office is in Frankfurt am Main. It was established in Berlin in 1870, before the end of the Franco-Prussian War, with the purpose of "carrying out all banking services to promote and facilitate commercial transactions between Germany, other European countries, and overseas markets." It is the oldest joint-stock commercial bank in Germany. Initially, it mainly carried out commercial banking services, focusing on trade finance and foreign exchange, and British-style short-term financing. However, after the Great Depression that began in 1929, it also began to provide long-term financing such as equipment financing, and to underwrite all shares issued by business companies and sell them when the time was right.

ドレスナー銀行，コメルツ銀行とともにドイツの三大商業銀行の一つで，預金高では3行中トップ。本店フランクフルト･アム･マイン。1870年に普仏戦争終了前のベルリンにおいて〈ドイツその他ヨーロッパ諸国および海外市場間の商取引を促進し，これを容易にするためにあらゆる銀行業務を営むこと〉を目的として設立された，ドイツで最古の株式会社形態の商業銀行。当初貿易金融，外国為替業務を中心にイギリス型の短期金融を主業務とする，いわゆる商業銀行業務を行っていたが，1929年からの大恐慌ののち設備資金供与などの長期金融や，事業会社の発行する株式をすべて引き受け，時機をみて売り出すという発起業務も併せ行うこととなった。
