...This is a form of dance in which one dancer plays various roles, and is currently performed in the southeastern part of Tamil Nadu, especially in the city of Madras. It was originally handed down by women who belonged to Hindu temples, called devadāsī (servants of the gods), but with the development of the feudal system, it also came to be danced at the courts of monarchs and feudal lords. However, the devadasis eventually became like prostitutes, and the dance declined.
