Among stereoisomers, those that are mirror images of each other are called enantiomers, and those that are not are called diastereoisomers. A molecule can have only one enantiomer, but it can have multiple diastereoisomers. For example, the only enantiomer of D-glucose is L-glucose, but the remaining 14 aldohexoses are all its diastereoisomers (see Figure 1). 立体異性体のうち,互いに鏡像関係にあるものをエナンチオ異性体といい,これ以外のものは互いにジアステレオ関係にあるといい,ジアステレオ異性体と呼ぶ。一つの分子はただ一つのエナンチオ異性体をもつことができるだけだが,複数のジアステレオ異性体をもつことはできる。たとえばD‐グルコースのエナンチオ異性体はL‐グルコースだけであるが,残りの14種のアルドヘキソースはすべてそのジアステレオ異性体である(図1参照)。
