It is a type of amulet distributed at shrines and temples, and is placed in a Shinto altar or Buddhist altar, or attached to entrances or pillars to pray for the protection of gods and Buddhas. There are many types, from protection against fire and insects to prayers for good luck and safety in the home. It is said that the origin of the name of the ofuda is a scroll on which the number of times to recite a sutra for prayer is written. 神社や寺院で頒布する護符(ごふ)の一種で、神棚や仏壇に納めたり、門口や柱などに取り付けて神仏の加護を願うもの。火難、虫除(よ)けから開運、家内安全を祈るものまで多種にわたる。御札は、祈祷(きとう)のための読経の回数を書き付けた巻数(かんず)が、そのもとであるといわれている。神に一夜の宿を提供したので、子孫に災いがなかったという神話に由来する、「蘇民(そみん)将来之子孫也」という御札をはる地域も広い。中世以降、紀伊の熊野神社の御師(おし)をはじめ、有力な社寺の御師や先達(せんだつ)が全国を回って御札を広め、その効用を説いた。ことに神札は、御神体として扱われるほどのものになっている。節分時によく目にするヤイカガシや竹の先に籠(かご)をつけて立てたメカゴ、村境に注連縄(しめなわ)を張って大草鞋(わらじ)をつるした辻(つじ)切り、玄関口に針千本という棘(とげ)のある魚や蜂(はち)の巣をつけた門守りなどは、悪霊除けとして伝えられた伝統的な風習であるが、しだいにその役目を御札に譲りつつある。
