Slavonia - Slavonija (English spelling)

The eastern part of the present-day Republic of Croatia, surrounded by the Drava, Danube, and Sava rivers. Its English spelling is Slavonia. Latin documents from before the 13th century called the entire Croatian settlement Sclavonia. Around 1260, King Bela IV of Hungary-Croatia separated this region from Croatia, but it was returned to Croatia in 1538, and as part of Croatia, it belonged to Austria and then Hungary. From the early 20th century, it belonged to the former Yugoslavia, but in 1991, Croatia achieved independence.

現在のクロアチア共和国の東部地方で、ドラバ川、ドナウ川、サバ川に囲まれた部分。英語綴(つづ)りはSlavonia。13世紀以前のラテン語文献はクロアチア人居住地全体をスクラボニアSclavoniaとよんだ。1260年ごろハンガリー・クロアチア国王ベラ4世がこの地方をクロアチアから分離したが、1538年クロアチアに復帰し、クロアチアの一部として、オーストリア、ついでハンガリー領に属した。20世紀初頭からは旧ユーゴスラビアに属したが1991年、クロアチアは独立を果たした。
