American pop singer and actor. Born Harry Lillis Crosby in Washington State. In 1926, he joined the Paul Whiteman Orchestra and formed a vocal trio called the Rhythm Boys, which attracted attention. He went independent in 1931. He was active in radio, records, and movies, and maintained his status as a major star representing America until his death. He was one of the earliest to master how to use a microphone, and created a new style with his natural vocalization and jazz sense, influencing many singers including Frank Sinatra, and becoming the foundation of modern popular vocals. He was a pioneer of white jazz singers. He began appearing in films in 1930, but in the 1940s he gained immense popularity with the "Vacation" series, such as "Alaska" (1945) in a trio with Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour (1914-1996), and won the Academy Award for Best Actor for "Going My Way" (1944). "White Christmas," which he created for "Swing Hotel" (1942), was his biggest hit and is still loved and sung all over the world during the season.
