…Roman tragedy began as an imitation and adaptation of Greek tragedy, and progressed toward Romanization, but after Accius no important tragic writers emerged, and the Republic eventually came to an end. In the Imperial period, during the reign of Emperor Augustus, famous politicians such as Gaius Asinius Pollio (76 BC-5 AD) and Ovid are known to have written tragedies, but their works were no longer suitable for the stage. The only Roman tragedies we can read today are those of Seneca, who lived under the reign of Emperor Nero. …
