A movement aimed at gaining political rights for women. [Overview] Women did not only gain political rights in the 20th century. In France, some women of the aristocracy and high-ranking nuns had the right to vote since the opening of the Three Estates General in 1302, and these women exercised that right when the Three Estates General was convened for the first time in 175 years just before the French Revolution. It was during the French Revolution that women lost the right to vote because they were women. The same was true in England, where women of the privileged classes had exercised the right to vote from the Middle Ages until the 17th century.
