High mountain tribe

Japanese:
High mountain tribe
Refers to some of the indigenous peoples of Taiwan. Currently, in Taiwan, the term Taiwanese aborigines is more common, and in Japan, like the indigenous peoples of other parts of the world, they are called Taiwanese aborigines. After the Qing Dynasty, the indigenous peoples who had become Han Chinese were called Jukuban, and those who had not were called Seiban. During the Japanese colonial period, the former were called Heiho and the latter Takasago, but the Kuomintang government renamed the latter Takasago. They are originally of Malay descent and speak an Indonesian language. Both their language and culture are similar to those of the mountain people of the Philippines, and their population is estimated at about 200,000. They were oppressed by the Han people who arrived in the 17th century, and mainly live in mountainous areas. They are settled agriculturalists who used to grow millet mainly through slash-and-burn cultivation, but nowadays they mainly grow upland rice. The mountainous region is occupied from the north by the Saysiyat, Atayal, Bunun, Tsou, Amis, Rukai, Puyuma, and Paiwan tribes, and the Yami tribe is found on the southeastern island. The indigenous religion is mainly animism. → Wushe Incident → Related Articles Taiwan
