Glow starter - Glow starter (English spelling)

A glow discharge tube filled with argon gas and used to start a fluorescent lamp. Also called a starter. It consists of a bimetal (movable) electrode and a fixed electrode, and is available in E-type (screw-in type) and P-type (bayonet type), with the P-type having a built-in capacitor to prevent noise. When lit with a glow starter, it takes several seconds for the fluorescent lamp to start. To shorten this time, electronic starters using thyristors and starters using dielectric elements such as barium titanate have been put into practical use, and it is now possible to light the lamp in about one second. Electronic glow starters are also becoming popular.

蛍光ランプを始動させるために用いる、アルゴンガスを封入したグロー放電管。点灯管ともいう。バイメタル（可動）電極と固定電極からなり、E型（ねじ込み口金型）とP型（差込みピン型）があり、P型には雑音防止用コンデンサーが内蔵されている。グロースターターで点灯すると、蛍光ランプが始動するまで数秒間を必要とする。この時間を短くするため、サイリスタを用いた電子スターターや、チタン酸バリウムなどの誘電体素子を用いたスターターが実用化されてからは、約1秒前後で点灯できるようになっている。ほかに、電子式のグロースターターも普及している。
