The source of the Ganga (Ganges) in the Garhwal Himalayas. It originates from the Gangotri Glacier, about 20 km east of Gangotri Peak (6,672 m), at 30°55'N and 79°07'E in northern Uttar Pradesh, India. It flows west past Gangotri, then south through Tehri, where it joins with the Alaknanda to form the Ganga. It is about 190 km long. It is traditionally considered the source of the Ganga and is one of the holiest rivers in India. Another river of the same name, in West Bengal, India, separates from the Ganga 8 km northeast of Jangipur, flows 190 km south, and joins the Jalangi to form the Hugli.
