...An Italian family of musicians in the Baroque period. Alessandro and Domenico are especially famous. (1) Alessandro S. (1660-1725) Born in Palermo. Went to Rome at the age of 12 to study music. Said to be a pupil of G. Calissimi. Invited by the King of Naples in 1684, he became the conductor of the Royal Chapel. He remained in Naples except for a period (1703-08) when he sought work in Florence and elsewhere. He composed many opera seria, which led to the flourishing of opera in Naples. ...
