Beyond the Gratitude and the Enmity
A short story by Kikuchi Kan. Published in Chuokoron in 1919. The story is about a monk named Ryokai and his enemy, Sanenosuke, working together to excavate a cave. Based on the history of the Aono Cave in Yabakei, the story criticizes the inhumanity of revenge and depicts the height of human emotion. It is a concise and clear work, and has been called a thematic novel. It was later dramatized by the author as More Than Revenge.

菊池寛の短編小説。1919年《中央公論》に発表。僧了海と,彼を敵(かたき)とねらう実之助とが協力して洞門を開削したという筋で,耶馬渓(やばけい)青ノ洞門の由来記に取材,敵討の非人間性を批判し,人間の情の高さを描いたもの。簡潔明快な作品で,テーマ小説と呼ばれた。のち作者により《敵討以上》として劇化された。
