It was during this period that Marshall published his major work, Principles of Economics (1890), and he was fundamentally interested in the harmonious development of the capitalist, entrepreneur, and labor classes. He believed that while in the short term there would appear to be a rivalry between labor and capital, in the long term, the national dividend (synonymous with national income, used in welfare economics) would increase, making it possible for the two to harmonize.
