A colloquial name for the area in southwestern Saitama Prefecture, stretching from the west of Hanno City to the southeastern part of Chichibu County. This place name was used by Musashino Railway, the predecessor of Seibu Railway's Ikebukuro Line, to advertise its hiking trails, but in 1951 (Showa 26), when the prefectural Oku-Musashi Nature Park was designated, this name became established and became common. The park's area spans Hanno City, Iruma City, and Hidaka City, but the name only refers to the mountainous area, and the low hilly areas are not called Oku-Musashi. However, it can also include Mount Buko in Chichibu, and mountainous areas such as Ogose Town, Moroyama Town, and Tokigawa Town. Thus, the name Oku-Musashi is not an administrative one, but is generally taken to mean "the mountainous area deep in Musashino." Located in the Naguri River, the upper reaches of the Irumagawa River, and the Koma River, the area is dominated by mountains around 1,000 meters high, such as Mt. Arima (1,214 meters), Mt. Bounomine (969 meters), and Mt. Izugatake (851 meters). Many people also visit the hilly areas of Mt. Tonosu, Mt. Tenran, and Mt. Hiwada for hiking. Okumusashi also has many passes, such as Shomaru Pass, Tsumasaka Pass, Torikubi Pass, Yamabushi Pass, Karibasaka Pass, Buna Pass, Iimori Pass, Koburi Pass, and Koma Pass, making it a popular hiking spot. The flat summit is home to Joraku-in (Takayama Fudo), Ne-no-gongen (Tenryu-ji), the ancient and venerable Koma Shrine, Shoten-in, and other temples and shrines, which add a special touch to the serene scenery. Because of its proximity to Tokyo, tourism development has progressed, centering on the construction of forest roads such as the Oku-Musashi Nature Trail and the Oku-Musashi Green Line, and in 1969, when the Seibu Railway built a tunnel through the Shomaru Pass to reach Chichibu, the number of hikers has increased.
