Born: February 29, 1784 in Halberstadt Died January 27, 1864. Munich German architect and archaeologist. Studied under A. Hilt in Berlin, and C. Percier and P. Fontaine in Paris. Became court architect in Kassel in 1804, but settled in Munich from 1816 onwards, producing works exclusively for the Bavarian royal family. Travelled to Italy in 1818. In 1834 he went to Greece on a diplomatic mission, where he studied the ancient remains of Athens and became the founder of German archaeology. Between 1839 and 1851 he visited St. Petersburg on numerous occasions at the invitation of Tsar Alexander II of Russia, where he built the Hermitage Museum (1839-49). Other works include such important neoclassical buildings as the Glyptothek in Munich (16-31), the Pinakothek (26-36), the Walhalla in Regensburg (30-42), and the Propylaean Palace (46-60).
