Western-style painter. Born in Kyoto. Entered the Kansai Art Academy and studied under Asai Chu. Fellow pupil was Yasui Sotaro. Travelled to France in 1908 and enrolled in the Académie Julian, after which he studied under Renoir. Returning to Japan in 1913, he exhibited works he created in Europe, such as Gold Necklace. The following year he participated in the founding of the Nikakai, but left in 1918. In 1926 he participated in the founding of the Western-style painting department of the Kokuga Sosaku Kyokai, and after the Japanese painting department was dissolved, it was renamed the Kokugakai and he played an active role as its leader. In 1952 he was awarded the Order of Culture. His early style showed the splendour of youth, as his gifted talent resonated with the richness of Renoir, but after returning to Japan he broke away from that influence and, through bold eclectic experiments such as mixing mineral pigments and oil paints, shed new light on Japanese tradition and built a clear, luxurious and unique style of painting. →Related topics Shunyokai | Hiratsuka Unichi | Yoshida Isohachi Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
