The capital of the department of Pas-de-Calais in northern France. It is located on the northern slope of the Artois hills. It is the second largest city in the department after Calais. It has been known as a textile town since Gallo-Roman times, but was destroyed by invasions by foreign tribes and rebuilt in the 6th century. It was integrated into the royal domain in the 12th century and developed as a center of the textile industry, including wool and tapestry, and as a financial center. In the 14th century, it declined due to civil wars. At the end of the 15th century, it was occupied by Spanish troops and remained under Spanish influence until Louis XIII recaptured it in 1640. Despite damage from two world wars, the old townscape, the square surrounded by Flemish-style houses, and the town hall (16th century) remain. It is a distribution center for local agricultural products, and in addition to the traditional textile industry, heavy industry is also well developed. Population 42,715 (1990).ArrasPlease see the Clarín page. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
