Born: February 13, 1769, Moscow
Died November 21, 1844. St. Petersburg. Russian fable writer and playwright. He taught himself while working in a government office in St. Petersburg, and initially wrote comedies and operas. In 1789 he edited and published the satirical magazine Pochta dukhov (Correspondence of the Spirits), and in 1792 Zritel' (Spectator). After wandering around various places, he published the comedies Modnaya lavka (1807) and Urok dochkam (07). At the same time, he published Dub i trost' (The Oak and the Reed) and other fable poems in 1806, and from 1809 to 1843 he published a nine-volume collection of fable poems containing 205 exquisite fables, including Ryb'ya plyaska (The Dance of the Fish), which earned him national fame. He succeeded in using the simple language of the people as a means of literary expression, paving the way for the development of Russian realism.

ロシアの寓話作家,劇作家。ペテルブルグの役所に勤務しながら独学,初め喜劇やオペラを書いていたが,1789年風刺雑誌『精霊通信』 Pochta dukhov,92年『見物人』 Zritel'などを編集刊行。各地を放浪後,喜劇『流行品店』 Modnaya lavka (1807) ,『娘たちへの教訓』 Urok dochkam (07) を刊行。かたわら,1806年『樫と葦』 Dub i trost'その他の寓話詩を発表,09年から 43年まで『魚の踊り』 Ryb'ya plyaskaなど珠玉の寓話 205編を収録した9巻の寓話詩集を出版して国民的名声を博した。素朴な民衆の言葉を文学の表現の手段として用いることに成功,ロシア・リアリズム文学発展のための道を開いた。
