The smallest unit of mass in the imperial system. It is 1/7000 of a common pound, which is equivalent to 1/5760 of a troy pound (64.79891 milligrams). Its origins lie in the ancient Orient, where it was based on a grain of barley. Grain means "grain of grain." There is also a unit called grain used for pearls, which is 0.77 common grains, which is equivalent to 49.90 milligrams.
