Ancient Greek tyrant of Megara. Date of birth and death unknown. He won the trust of the people by slaughtering the livestock of the wealthy, and held the position of tyrant from about 640 to 620 BC. When his son-in-law, Cylon of Athens, staged a coup d'état in 632 BC, following an oracle from Delphi, and seized power by occupying the Acropolis, Theagenes supported him with military force. However, the plot was defeated, and Theagenes himself was eventually driven out of Megara. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
