mocambo

Japanese: mocambo
mocambo

...After 1570, the quilombos spread to the northern Brazilian regions of Bahia and Pernambuco as the import of black slaves increased, and in the 18th century they spread to the regions of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, and existed throughout Brazil until the emancipation of slaves in 1888. Until the beginning of the 17th century, the quilombos were called mocambos. They were closed villages consisting of 50 to several thousand houses in dense forests and remote mountain areas, fortified with fences and moats. They engaged in farming, hunting, and fishing, and also raided white settlements and plantations to obtain weapons, clothing, tools, and women.
