An anarchist and feminist theorist born in Lithuania. She moved to New York, and at the age of 24, she was arrested for criticizing the government in front of striking watchmakers. As an anarchist, she aimed for a free society unconstrained by law, and preached that women's liberation is not enough simply to gain the right to vote, and that true liberation begins in the soul of women. She began publishing the magazine Mother Earth in 1906, which advocated sexual and psychological freedom within organic communities. She was expelled from the country in 1919 and sent back to Russia. Disillusioned by the Russian Revolution in 1921, she escaped, and supported the republicans during the Spanish Civil War. Her work The Tragedy of Women's Liberation (1911) is known for its translation by Ito Noe.GoldmanSource : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
