A samurai of the Sendai domain during the Meiji Restoration period. His given name was Yoshimo, his pen name was Shihatsu, he was commonly known as Satayu, and he was also called Setsui and Tokai. He was born in Sendai castle town as the fifth son of Tamamushi Nobushige. He entered the domain school Yoken-do and studied under Saito Masanori. In 1846, he ran away to Edo due to a deep feeling. He became a pupil of Hayashi Fukusai, and later became the head of the school. He then served the Hakodate magistrate Hori Oribe Masatoshi, and in 1857 accompanied Hori to Ezo, inspecting various places and creating a detailed record in nine volumes, "Nyuhokuki." His observation skills and detailed records were outstanding. In 1860, he joined the American mission as an attendant to the chief envoy, Niimi Buzen-no-kami Masaoki, and inspected the American cultural and cultural systems, and wrote a detailed record in eight volumes, "Nikkoku Koubei Nikki." After returning to Japan, he was allowed to return to his domain, and later became deputy head of the Yokendo school. From the Bunkyu to Genji eras (1861-65), he was in Edo, where he collected various information and compiled what are today important historical documents in the history of the Meiji Restoration, such as the "Kanbu Tsuki," "Hazan Kiji," and "Ibishi Nyuuko Roku." During the Boshin period, he played an active role in the establishment of the Oshu-Uetsu Reppan Alliance, but after the surrender of the Sendai domain, he joined Enomoto Takeaki's fleet and attempted to travel to Ezo, but was captured and imprisoned in Sendai, where he committed seppuku and had his stipend confiscated. He is buried at Hoshun-in, one of the three hundred men of the Sendai clan. <References> Yamamoto Akira, "A Brief Biography of Tamamushi Satayu, with an Annex to the Diary of a Voyage to America"
