A samurai of the Sendai domain during the Meiji Restoration period. His given name was Yoshimo, his pen name was Shihatsu, he was commonly known as Satayu, and he was also called Setsui and Tokai. He was born in Sendai castle town as the fifth son of Tamamushi Nobushige. He entered the domain school Yoken-do and studied under Saito Masanori. In 1846, he ran away to Edo due to a deep feeling. He became a pupil of Hayashi Fukusai, and later became the head of the school. He then served the Hakodate magistrate Hori Oribe Masatoshi, and in 1857 accompanied Hori to Ezo, inspecting various places and creating a detailed record in nine volumes, "Nyuhokuki." His observation skills and detailed records were outstanding. In 1860, he joined the American mission as an attendant to the chief envoy, Niimi Buzen-no-kami Masaoki, and inspected the American cultural and cultural systems, and wrote a detailed record in eight volumes, "Nikkoku Koubei Nikki." After returning to Japan, he was allowed to return to his domain, and later became deputy head of the Yokendo school. From the Bunkyu to Genji eras (1861-65), he was in Edo, where he collected various information and compiled what are today important historical documents in the history of the Meiji Restoration, such as the "Kanbu Tsuki," "Hazan Kiji," and "Ibishi Nyuuko Roku." During the Boshin period, he played an active role in the establishment of the Oshu-Uetsu Reppan Alliance, but after the surrender of the Sendai domain, he joined Enomoto Takeaki's fleet and attempted to travel to Ezo, but was captured and imprisoned in Sendai, where he committed seppuku and had his stipend confiscated. 幕末維新期の仙台藩士。名は誼茂,字は子発,通称左太夫,拙斎また東海と号す。仙台城下で玉虫伸茂の5男に生まれる。藩校養賢堂に入り斎藤真典につく。弘化3(1846)年感ずるところあって江戸に出奔。林復斎に入門,のち塾長となる。その後箱館奉行堀織部正利煕に仕え,安政4(1857)年堀に随行して蝦夷地に赴き各地を視察し詳細な記録『入北記』9巻を作成。その観察力と克明な記録は抜群である。万延1(1860)年の遣米使節派遣に正使新見豊前守正興の従者として加わり,アメリカの文物制度を視察し克明な記録『航米日録』8巻を著した。帰国後帰藩を許され,のち養賢堂学頭副役となる。文久から元治(1861~65)にかけ江戸にあり種々の情報を収集し,『官武通記』『波山記事』『夷匪入港録』など今日幕末維新史上の重要史料となるものを作成。戊辰期には奥羽越列藩同盟成立に活躍したが,仙台藩の降服により榎本武揚の艦隊に投じ蝦夷行を企てるも捕らわれ仙台に投獄され,切腹家禄没収となった。墓は仙台三百人丁保春院。<参考文献>山本晃『玉虫左太夫略伝・附航米日録』
