French composer and organist. Born into a family of musicians in Paris, he served as organist at the Jacobin cathedral of Paris, Saint-Sulpice. In 1701, he received permission to publish his works, and published a series of organ pieces, harpsichord pieces, and secular cantatas. Although he was a church musician, he used suite form for his organ pieces, without considering their use in mass. He devoted most of his energy to secular cantatas, which have refined melodic beauty and lively rhythms, and these include masterpieces in this field in 18th century France, such as "Orphée" and "Médée."
