A city in Karaganda Oblast, Republic of Kazakhstan, Central Asia. Also spelled Balkhash or Balqas. A port city on the north shore of Lake Balkhash. Population 65,400 (1999). Since the copper smelter was built in 1928, it has become a major center of colored metallurgy. The development of the Balkhash copper refinery complex has been particularly remarkable. The water of Lake Balkhash is also used for industrial purposes. The Botanical Garden of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan is located here.
