Balhash - English spelling Балхаш/Balhash

A city in Karaganda Oblast, Republic of Kazakhstan, Central Asia. Also spelled Balkhash or Balqas. A port city on the north shore of Lake Balkhash. Population 65,400 (1999). Since the copper smelter was built in 1928, it has become a major center of colored metallurgy. The development of the Balkhash copper refinery complex has been particularly remarkable. The water of Lake Balkhash is also used for industrial purposes. The Botanical Garden of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan is located here.

中央アジア、カザフスタン共和国カラガンダ州の都市。Balkhash,Balqasとも表記する。バルハシ湖の北岸に臨む港町。人口6万5400（1999）。1928年に銅精錬所ができて以来、有色冶金(やきん)の大中心地となった。とくにバルハシ精銅コンビナートの発達が著しい。バルハシ湖の水は工業用にも利用されている。カザフスタン共和国科学アカデミー植物園がある。
