Fukue Domain

Japanese:
Fukue Domain
A small outside domain with its territory in Matsuura County, Hizen Province (Goto). The domain's headquarters was Fukue Castle (also known as Ishida Castle), the remains of which remain in present-day Goto City, Nagasaki Prefecture. The domain's lord was the Goto clan (Uku clan) since the Middle Ages, and remained unchanged until the Meiji Restoration. In 1617, the red seal tax was over 15,530 koku. The Uku clan, who controlled the Goto Islands during the Sengoku period, were granted permission to retain their former territory when Toyotomi Hideyoshi punished them in Kyushu in 1587. Initially, Egawa Castle was the base of operations, but it was burned down in 1614, and they were not allowed to build castles, so Ishida Jin'ya was used as the domain's headquarters for a long time, and Ishida Castle was established in 1863 during the late Edo period. The first domain lord, Uku Jungen, served under Konishi Yukinaga during the Bunroku War, and his formation showed the characteristics of a naval force. At this time, the clan changed its name to Goto. While the domain's power was not yet firmly established, a family turmoil caused by Ohama Mondo occurred in 1619, but the third domain lord, Moritoshi, took this as an opportunity to promote the "Fukue Restoration" by moving his vassals from the countryside, reforming the chigyo system and laying the foundations of domain administration. In 1661, the division of the domain's territory by Morikiyo, the uncle of the fifth domain lord, Morikatsu, was recognized, and the so-called Tomie Domain was established. In 1721, a land survey and a personal classification system were carried out within the domain, and in 1763, a three-year apprenticeship system was implemented as part of a financial reconstruction effort. The village area was divided into 13 areas, including Kuga-kake and Wakamatsu-kake, and fishing, mainly whaling, and salt grilling were popular in the Ura area, but it was also incorporated into the defense system for foreign ships, with the establishment of a lookout post. At the end of the Edo period, the Tomie Domain was integrated into the Fukue Domain in an effort to expel foreigners, but due to opposition from the domain's residents, it was not until 1869 that it was finally merged. In July 1871, when the feudal domains were abolished and prefectures were established, Fukue Prefecture was established from the territory of Fukue Domain, and in November of the same year it was incorporated into Nagasaki Prefecture.
