...The establishment of a bessho signifies the accomplishment of the occupation of a specific area, the development of that land (acquisition of an economic base) and religious development (construction of facilities and religious activities of monks and saints there). Therefore, like Kurodani Bessho Seiryuji and Ohara Bessho Shorinin, besshos also had temple or temple names, but were often called by the place name. Besshos were often exempt from miscellaneous duties, which were one of the economic burdens that came with occupying the land, and the name bessho is thought to have originated from this....
