[Remains of courtyard-type dwellings in ancient Greece and Rome]
Many ancient Greek houses had a courtyard, and excavations have uncovered houses in Olynthos (5th-4th centuries BC), Priene (3rd-2nd centuries BC), and the island of Delos (2nd century BC). The structure of the house was such that one entered the courtyard (aulē) through an entrance gate (prothyron) facing the road, and then there was a roofed walkway (pastas) facing the courtyard, to which each room had its own entrance. The main room (andrōn) was originally a room for entertaining male guests, but was also used as a dining room and banquet hall. …
